Stinson Hosts 7th Annual Pro Bono Legal Nonprofit Legal Clinic Supporting Kansas City Organizations
On June 11, Stinson LLP hosted its 7th annual Pro Bono Nonprofit Legal Clinic in Kansas City, bringing together local nonprofit organizations for free legal guidance on issues affecting nonprofit operations. The clinic was organized in partnership with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic, Kansas Legal Services, and the Mid-American Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel. Stinson, Terracon Consultants, Inc., and Koch Capabilities, LLC served as financial sponsors.
Prior to the clinic, nonprofits applied for assistance and were paired with teams of Stinson attorneys and in-house counsel from local organizations. Pairings were based on each nonprofit's legal needs and the participating attorneys' areas of practice, ensuring tailored support across issues such as corporate governance, employment law, real estate and intellectual property.
"Nonprofits play a vital role in strengthening our communities, often delivering essential services under significant resource constraints," said Stinson Pro Bono Counsel Katie Cronin. "This clinic allows us to provide practical legal support while connecting attorneys and in-house counsel directly with organizations making a meaningful impact in Kansas City."
Participating nonprofits included AdHoc Group Against Crime, Birth It Forward, Center for Supportive Communities, Heartland 180 Inc., Leavenworth County Humane Society, Mediation Achieving Results in Children, Minding the Gap, The Single Mom KC, SOTV Creators Collective LLC, Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association, What if Puppets, and Wildwood Outdoor Education Center. Collectively, these organizations support children and youth, education and animal welfare, medical research and STEM programming, families impacted by violent crime, pregnant and single mothers, and the environment.
"We are a small nonprofit, so this clinic means that we can actually get legal advice that we wouldn't otherwise be able to get, therefore strengthening all of our documents and ensuring that we are doing the best we can by our employees so that we can better serve our clients," said Amanda Kibler, Executive Director of What if Puppets.
Stinson attorneys involved in the clinic included David Barnard, Brittany Barrientos, James Cronin, Scot Hill, Charles Jensen, William Koenigsdorf, Patricia Konopka, Jay Simpson, Kent Stallard, Kenda Tomes, and Colin Turner.
Participating in-house counsel included PNC Bank’s Patrick Calland; Terracon Consultants, Inc.'s Patrick Courtney, Lindsey Gard, Anish Patel and Ivana Sell; Hallmark Cards, Incorporated's Alison Erickson and Elizabeth Tassi; Rosen's Inc.’s Aaron Freestone; and Koch Capabilities, LLC's Stephanie LaRocco, Maddy Tannahill, Sean Tarantino and Kristin Westgard.
Stinson summer associates and interns from Kansas Legal Services, Terracon Consultants, Inc., and Koch Capabilities, LLC also supported each of the attorney teams.
Stinson's pro bono practice is led by the firm's Pro Bono Committee and implemented by Pro Bono Counsel Katie Cronin, along with Pro Bono Attorney Tim Sanders Szabo and Pro Bono Manager Kayla Hogan.
