Colin strives to protect his clients’ brands and ideas in a strategic, cost-effective and efficient manner.

An experienced registered patent attorney and litigator, Colin focuses his practice in intellectual property litigation, patent preparation and prosecution, and trademark prosecution and enforcement.

Colin has considerable experience representing clients in patent, copyright, trademark and trade dress infringement litigation. He also has significant experience in Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings. His experience in handling all aspects of litigation in federal and state courts is extensive. At the beginning of his legal career, his practice focused exclusively on the defense of clients in general civil litigation matters. He draws upon this invaluable experience in his representation of clients in intellectual property disputes. One of his strengths is effectively managing the numerous moving parts associated with complex litigation.

With a chemical engineering background, Colin is well suited for working with inventors in a variety of technological areas—including in the fields of industrial-scale chemical and oil manufacturing—to prepare and prosecute U.S. and foreign patent applications. He also helps clients to evaluate whether their products and/or processes pose any risk of patent infringement.

Colin also assists clients in protecting their brands through cease and desist letter campaigns and the preparation and submission of takedown notices to on-line retailers and social media websites.

Colin has served as lead counsel in an IPR proceeding on behalf of the petitioners and obtained a ruling from the PTAB that there was a reasonable likelihood that all challenged claims would be shown invalid (Featured on Law360). A settlement was reached shortly thereafter and the proceeding was terminated. The Kroger Co., MGPI Processing, Inc., and MGP Ingredients, Inc. v. Healthy Fiber, LLC, IPR No. 2018-00824

He obtained a $2.7 million verdict of patent infringement that the court increased by an additional 50 percent due to the jury's finding of willful infringement. Cobalt Boats, LLC v. Sea Ray Boats, Inc., and Brunswick Corp., Eastern District of Virginia, 2017

Colin successfully defended the patent owner against challenges to the validity of claims of the patent. Brunswick Corp. & Sea Ray Boats, Inc. v. Cobalt Boats, LLC, IPR No. 2015-01060 (P.T.A.B.)

He has represented a famous restaurant brand in federal court in a trademark, trade dress and copyright infringement suit brought against another restaurant operator and obtained a settlement.

Colin has successfully represented multiple defendants in lawsuits filed by non-practicing entities.

He has also defended a music publisher against a lawsuit alleging copyright and trademark infringement and obtained a settlement, part of which included an entry of judgment in favor of client as to related counterclaims.

Colin defended a national online retailer against a lawsuit alleging copyright and trademark infringement and obtained a settlement.

He first-chaired the defense of a personal injury lawsuit that resulted in a defense verdict in favor of client.

Colin has prepared and prosecuted patents in technology areas such as chemical separation processes, catalytically enhanced reactions, oil-field chemicals, pharmaceuticals (veterinary medication and cancer-therapy drug precursors), small molecules, implantable drug delivery systems, polymers, cryogenics and cryogenic devices, medical devices and mechanical devices.

His experience also includes the representation of a major sporting goods company in deploying cease and desist enforcement program to protect well-known brands.
