Press Release
09.23.2026

Stinson LLP is pleased to welcome Dr. Shu Chen as of counsel in the firm's Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Division. Based in Washington, DC, Dr. Chen focuses on patent strategy for technology-driven companies, with experience developing and managing portfolios involving artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud infrastructure, robotics, advanced electronics, medical devices and other emerging technologies. Her addition brings additional patent depth to Stinson’s East Coast presence and strengthens the firm's ability to advise clients whose businesses depend on innovation.

With a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, Dr. Chen brings a technical perspective to patent strategy that allows her to work closely with engineering and business teams to identify innovations and align intellectual property portfolios with product development and commercialization goals. Her practice encompasses the full patent lifecycle, from invention development, drafting and prosecution through portfolio strategy, freedom-to-operate analysis and strategic counseling.

"Shu brings an exceptional combination of technical depth and sophisticated patent experience to our intellectual property and technology practice," said Jason Conway, co-chair of the firm's Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Division. "Her ability to understand complex technologies and translate that knowledge into effective IP strategies is a tremendous asset to our clients."

Dr. Chen also advises clients on the intellectual property considerations that accompany product development and market growth, including patent landscape analyses, product mapping, design-around strategies, licensing and potential infringement and invalidity issues. Her practice also extends to trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, publications and open-source issues.

"I'm excited to join Stinson's Intellectual Property & Technology practice and bring my experience in patent strategy and emerging technologies to the firm's clients," said Dr. Chen. "Stinson's depth in intellectual property and its collaborative approach provide an excellent platform for helping technology-driven companies protect their innovations and build IP strategies that support their business goals."

Dr. Chen earned her J.D. from George Washington University Law School and her M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Tufts University. She is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
