Mark Wraight, Partner and Office Managing Partner of Stinson LLP's San Francisco office, authored an article for Law360 Pulse's Expert Analysis series "Biz Development Tip Of The Month," examining how intentional knowledge transfer within law firms functions as a critical driver of client service, continuity and business development.

In the article, Wraight emphasizes that this is particularly important in a legal market defined by lateral movement and firm combination. He notes that when client relationships are supported by multiple attorneys who understand not only the legal work but also business operations, decision-making structures and client preferences, firms are better positioned to preserve continuity during periods of transition.

"In a lateral and consolidating market, we cannot afford to view institutional knowledge as an internal human resources concern," said Wraight. "Intentional knowledge transfer is, at its core, a business development function – one that protects continuity and sustains client relationships over time."

Wraight outlines practical approaches to strengthening knowledge transfer, which includes integrating junior attorneys into client-facing discussions, maintaining consistent informal documentation of client insights, and clearly contextualizing assignments within broader client objectives. He also highlights the importance of adapting these practices in remote and hybrid work environments, where purposeful communication becomes essential to sustaining collaboration and institutional memory.

The article concludes that firms that treat knowledge preservation as a deliberate business development strategy are better equipped to deliver consistent client service and build long-term relationships that extend beyond individual attorney transitions.
