Ruth Rivard and Joel Leviton Co-Author Chapter in The IP book

Partners Ruth Rivard and Joel Leviton recently co-authored a chapter for The IP Book titled "Key Copyright Developments and Cases of 2020-21." The chapter provides an insightful overview of copyright decisions issued in 2020 and 2021, including the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the dispute between Google and Oracle. Rivard also served as an editor for this edition.

Rivard and Leviton both recently presented on the same topic at the 2021 Midwest IP Institute. They presented their "2021 Copyright Law Year in Review," discussing recent case developments in the area of copyright law. In addition, Rivard had the unique opportunity to interview Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office, during the institute.

An intellectual property attorney and litigator, Rivard serves as counselor, protector and enforcer for her clients regarding their intellectual property rights, providing strategic and thoughtful advice and zealous representation in court with an eye always towards the client’s business goals. As a trial lawyer, Rivard represents clients in federal courts, federal appellate courts, and alternative dispute resolution proceedings. She has represented clients in a wide array of industries such as agribusiness, children's products, beauty products, insurance, life sciences, health care, real estate, media and advertising.

Leviton works closely with clients to develop global brand protection strategies and manages global trademark portfolios for Fortune 500 companies.  Leviton also helps clients protect and license creative content and technology and has significant experience licensing and exploiting intellectual property, including negotiating and preparing trademark licenses, ingredient-branding licensing, co-branding arrangements, copyright-related agreements, technology licenses and services agreements, and name and likeness licenses.
