Glantz Discusses Pro Bono Partnership That Led to Vacated Conviction with Law Week Colorado

Stinson LLP Partner Perry Glantz is featured in a Law Week Colorado article examining the collaborative effort that led to the exoneration of Stephen Martinez after nearly three decades in prison. The article explores how the Korey Wise Innocence Project (KWIP) at the University of Colorado Law School, working alongside Stinson attorneys, successfully challenged a conviction based on outdated forensic science.

The article traces the evolution of medical understanding surrounding Shaken Baby Syndrome and its impact on wrongful conviction cases. Reflecting on the investigation, Glantz explained that assumptions accepted as scientific certainty at the time of Martinez's trial ultimately proved to be unsupported. "What was wrong about Shaken Baby Syndrome was it was almost more of a belief system than a scientific reality," he said. "They're like, well, he was the only one there. It has to be him. There was really no investigation."

Law Week Colorado also highlights the partnership between KWIP and Stinson, detailing how the firm's pro bono team helped manage the extensive factual and medical record while working alongside innocence project attorneys, independent counsel and volunteer law students. Glantz, who serves on the board of KWIP, describes contributing to the case as a meaningful opportunity to support the pursuit of justice. "I'm not a criminal defense lawyer.
