Michael represents innovators and industry leaders in complex challenges to intellectual property. He has successfully litigated complex patent disputes to achieve results that make business sense for his clients.
A savvy litigator and registered patent attorney with an extensive understanding of life science and finance, Michael blends these attributes to defend a wide range of IP issues in a broad spectrum of technologies. He handles patent infringement, post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, such as Inter Partes Review and covered business method proceedings, trademark and trade dress infringement, misappropriation of trade secrets, and other complex commercial matters. Arguing patent issues in district courts throughout the U.S., Michael also has experience defending commercial disputes and appeals in federal court, including antitrust cases.
Michael represented an accused infringer against allegations of patent infringement involving machines for producing personalized financial and other integrated circuit cards.
In Bonutti Research, Inc. et al. v. Lantz Medical, Inc., (U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana), he successfully represented a manufacturer of medical orthotic devices against a competitor in a patent infringement lawsuit resulting in a favorable settlement.
In Lantz Medical, Inc. v. Bonutti Research, Inc. et al (IPR Proceedings before the USPTAB), Michael successfully defeated four IPR petitions filed by a competitor at the institution decision phase.
He won grant of summary judgment for drug manufacturer in lawsuit alleging breach of contract, misappropriation of an idea and unfair competition.
Michael represented a patent owner in a patent infringement lawsuit involving encryption methods for printing security images on financial instruments resulting in a favorable settlement following appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
