Mary understands that effective legal counsel, delivered with a strong commitment to client service and an eye toward restraining costs, is a key contributor to the success of any health care business.
Overview
Mary’s comprehensive health care practice channels over 30 years’ experience in health care law to focus on complex transactions, patient care and medical staff issues, regulatory compliance, tax exemption and governance. When problems arise, she helps health care providers achieve their business and patient care goals while minimizing regulatory and liability exposure.
In the highly regulated, high-risk business of health care, Mary uses a collaborative and engaging counseling style to help clients craft customized solutions to legal and business problems. When unexpected crises arise, Mary helps clients manage potential liability as well as avoid damaging media exposure. Mary previously served as general counsel of a large nonprofit health care system, giving her a keen sense of the issues facing health care executives, the analytical, transactional and management skills required to meet these challenges, and an appreciation of the unique budgetary issues facing businesses in the health care industry.
Experience
Mary has represented critical access hospitals in affiliations with larger health systems and assisted hospitals in integration transactions with physician groups, involving both professional services agreements (PSAs) and clinic acquisitions.
She has helped restructure health care entities of different sizes and provider types, in order to better meet their strategic, financial and patient care goals.
Mary has provided governance education and support to newly-formed non-profit health care entities and worked with multiple parties in a community to redesign the delivery of health care services and align their interests.
She handled multiple engagements with hospital medical staffs in medical staff governance, bylaw and peer review and also represented physicians and other providers in medical staff matters.
Mary represented a critical access hospital in response to an EMTALA violation and prepared and filed a Stark Self-Referral Disclosure Protocol submission following internal investigation of Stark law violation.
