Stinson LLP attorney Austin Tapuro contributed to Attorney at Law Magazine's "2026 First-Generation Lawyers Special Issue," sharing the experiences and lessons that have shaped his career.

Tapuro reflects on the unique challenges faced by first-generation lawyers, noting that much of law school and early practice assumes access to informal guidance, family insight, or professional networks. "Being a first-generation attorney often means learning the rules of the game while playing it," he writes, highlighting how he navigated the profession without a traditional support system.

He credits the values instilled by his family and community as his foundation, which helped him lean into discomfort and advocate for himself in unfamiliar spaces. Tapuro emphasizes the importance of building a community and seeking guidance, even in the face of setbacks. "I built my own community—sometimes through moments that began with rejection," he says, noting how mentors and first-generation peers provided crucial guidance along the way.

Tapuro's experience has also shaped his approach to practice. "Being a first-generation lawyer has instilled empathy, adaptability, and a strong appreciation for mentorship, while reinforcing the responsibility to help make the profession more transparent and accessible for others," he writes. His contribution offers insight into how persistence, curiosity and openness to feedback can guide first-generation lawyers toward success.

Tapuro is a labor and employment attorney who helps employers navigate the complexities of traditional labor law in both unionized and non-unionized workplaces. He is well-versed in a broad range of employment issues, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, severance and non-compete agreements. He also advises clients on drafting personnel policies that support compliant and productive work environments.
