Press Release
09.21.2016

St. LOUIS (Sept. 21, 2016)—Stinson Leonard Street is proud to announce that the firm's St. Louis office received the Pro Bono Public Award from the Missouri Bar Association.

The award was presented at the Missouri Bar Association's Annual Meeting. It is given to the attorneys and law firms that have demonstrated exemplary service to low-income individuals who need legal assistance consistent with the profession's traditions and ethical code.

The office was nominated for the award by Patti Hageman, the Director of the Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM.) More than a third of the firm's St. Louis attorneys have accepted a pro bono referral through VLP. Through the program, the firm's attorneys have successfully assisted numerous victims of domestic violence and their children by obtaining orders of protection and handling long-term custody matters through LSEM's Lasting Solutions Family Law Program. The firm also does formation work through the Community Economic Development Program and guardianship and termination of parental rights cases from the Family Court Program. The firm regularly assists with appellate briefs, guardianship matters and small business issues.

Hageman described the firm's pro bono work as: "true roll-up-your-sleeves, direct client representation which is often difficult and not often glamourous. But it is the type of pro bono work that makes the most direct impact on the lives of low-income citizens in our region."

Stinson Leonard Street has a longstanding commitment to pro bono legal service. In 2015 the firm donated 21,000 hours of pro bono service and more than $8 million in lawyer and paralegal time, with 95 percent of the firm's pro bono work benefitting indigent individuals and the nonprofits that serve them.

Pro Bono Committee members David Everson, Andrew Scavatto and John Young, Jr., lead the firm’s partnership with LSEM. Many St. Louis attorneys and staff volunteered their time this year, including: Michelle Corrigan, Scott Eidson, Joe Hipskind, Jenna Hueneger, Mark Jacobs, Cicely Lubben, Samir Mehta, Julie Scheipeter, Joy Syrcle, Brian Weaver and Nicole Zellweger.

"I offer my sincerest congratulations to the St. Louis office for its tenacity and dedication to solving the everyday legal problems faced by the most vulnerable members of our community," said Mark Hinderks, the managing partner of Stinson Leonard Street. "Our firm has a proud history of supporting local legal aid organizations through pro bono in all of our offices. The work being done in St. Louis through the Volunteer Lawyers Program is a great example of how we are carrying that tradition forward today."
