Stinson Leonard Street Adds Leviton to Intellectual Property Practice in Minneapolis
Stinson Leonard Street LLP announced that Joel D. Leviton has joined the firm's Intellectual Property and Technology (IP&T) Division as a partner in the firm's Minneapolis office. Prior to joining Stinson Leonard Street, Leviton was a principal at a national IP firm and co-chair of that firm's copyright group.
Leviton is the third partner to join Stinson Leonard Street since Jan. 1, 2014, when Stinson Morrison Hecker and Leonard, Street and Deinard completed their merger. The combined firm has offices in 14 cities and more than 520 attorneys.
"Joel takes a strategic, business-minded approach to advising companies in their efforts to establish and protect strong brands," said Steve Cosentino, Stinson Leonard Street's IP&T Division chair. "Clients we represent will benefit from Joel's comprehensive experience assisting companies with critical marketing and operational projects, from advertising campaigns and product launches to social media and web-related issues."
Leviton represents brand-driven companies from a variety of industries that market and sell consumer products, interactive entertainment, apparel, software, pharmaceuticals and other products. His trademark experience includes advising companies on global brand protection strategies. He also helps clients select, clear, register and enforce trademarks in the U.S. and abroad.
Leviton's copyright experience can be traced back to his roots in the arts, which he applies to help clients protect and license copyrighted works.
Leviton's transactional IP work also extends to licensing and exploiting intellectual property, including negotiating and preparing trademark licenses; ingredient-branding licensing; co-branding arrangements; copyright-related agreements; and name and likeness licenses.
In addition to his transactional IP experience, Leviton handles disputes involving trademarks, copyrights, and domain names, including litigation in federal courts. He routinely represents clients in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
"I was drawn to Stinson Leonard Street because I can draw from the firm's broader range of services and the experience of more than 500 attorneys across the firm, which is important to the types of clients that I represent," said Leviton. "I also am looking forward to being a part of the firm's growing IP&T practice."
Stinson Leonard Street's IP&T Division consists of 40 attorneys, including former judicial clerks, registered patent attorneys with extensive scientific and technical backgrounds, seasoned litigators and accomplished negotiators. The firm's attorneys are also supported by specially trained IP assistants, state-of-the-art practice skill development, and IP-focused information technology. Stinson Leonard Street works with an established network of foreign associates in more than 50 countries to protect the IP assets of clients throughout the world. The firm's combination of attorney and non-attorney professionals and resources provides clients with efficient, timely and cost-effective services.
In addition to writing and speaking on IP topics, Leviton has earned significant recognition since entering the practice of law. Managing Intellectual Property selected Leviton as an IP Star in 2013 and 2014. Leviton was listed in Best Lawyers Trademark Law, 2014. He was named a 2010 “Up & Coming Lawyer” by Minnesota Lawyer, and the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal named him a "Forty Under 40" honoree in 2009.
Leviton has also been listed in the World Trademark Review 1000 (Gold Band, Minnesota, 2012-2014), which noted his “‘insightful and astute’ advice assures an enduring reputation for excellence,” and Leviton's clients say he “understands our situation intimately and has been very generous with his time. Frankness and hard work describe him to a tee. His communication is top-notch: he kept us updated throughout the loops and hoops of the legal processes and led us through thousands of pages of documents during discovery."
Leviton earned a law degree, summa cum laude, from William Mitchell College of Law. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
