Partner Rob Kugler Comments on Abuse-related Bankruptcies in the Washington Post

In the News

Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Partner Rob Kugler was recently quoted in an article by The Washington Post on the USA Gymnastics bankruptcy case, involving survivors of abuse.

The article details how abuse survivors in this case have yet to receive any part of a settlement, and the issues surrounding large payouts for attorneys representing USA Gymnastics and the Committee representing the survivors of abuse.

“These are not traditional commercial bankruptcy cases; these are cases involving people who suffered the most horrendous of injuries,” said Rob. He further comments on billing inconsistencies on the part of those attorneys, and lack of willingness to discount rates for survivors of serious sexual abuse.

Rob is a leader in the representation of survivors of sexual abuse in enforcing their claims in bankruptcy. Rob secured the largest ever recovery in a catholic diocese bankruptcy in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis case ($210 million). Additionally, Rob has represented survivor committees in the bankruptcy cases of the Crosier Order, the Diocese of Duluth, the Diocese of New Ulm, the Diocese of Winona/Rochester and the Archdiocese of Agaña (Guam).
