Minnesota Lawyer Recognizes Adine Momoh Among the 2022 Attorneys of the Year
Stinson LLP Partner Adine S. Momoh has been recognized among the 2022 Attorneys of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer for Outstanding Service to the Profession. Momoh is recognized for initiating a national pro bono challenge to improve access to justice and to remove systemic racial and socioeconomic disparities in our country and for creating a multi-part training program for attorneys to support these efforts.
As a result of the death of George Floyd in 2020 and the national civil unrest that followed, Momoh, while serving as chair of the Federal Bar Association Younger Lawyers Division (YLD), developed the StepUp Pro Bono Challenge. As part of the initiative, Federal Bar Association members are challenged to complete during the Federal Bar Association's fiscal year at least 50 hours of pro bono legal work related to improving access to justice and removing systemic racial and socioeconomic disparities for nonprofit organizations and low-income individuals.
To increase the level of participation and to support the efforts of being proactive and influencing positive change, in 2021, Momoh and the YLD partnered with University of St. Thomas' Dr. Artika Tyner, Esq. This led to the development of a national multi-part Continuing Legal Education (CLE) training program, "A Call to Action: Stepping Up to Effectuate Change in a Time of Crisis." The program facilitates discussions on ways attorneys can use their legal skills and knowledge to complete pro bono legal work aligned with the goals of the StepUp Pro Bono Challenge. The first program was held in October 2021, and the second will be held in 2023.
"Pro bono work should not begin and end with this challenge, Momoh said. "It is our expectation that the pro bono work will be ongoing, as that is what is expected of us, and it is simply the right thing to do."
This is the second time Minnesota Lawyer has recognized Momoh among their Attorneys of the Year honorees.
In addition to Momoh, Stinson Pro Bono Director Theresa Hughes is also recognized by the publication as an Attorney of the Year for Outstanding Service to the Profession. Hughes was recognized for her dedicated leadership and steadfast commitment to pro bono legal work during her 20 years at the firm. Momoh and Hughes will be recognized as 2022 Attorneys of the Year Wednesday, February 15.
In addition to her leadership activities in the legal community, Momoh is a nationally recognized bankruptcy and trial attorney, defending complex business and commercial litigation matters for securities, banking, estates and trust clients, and resolving creditors' rights and bankruptcy cases in state and federal courts nationwide. Momoh co-chairs the firm's Estates and Trusts Litigation practice group, where she leverages her experience in estates and trusts litigation and bankruptcy and creditors' rights to provide sophisticated advice and advocacy when disputes arise involving wealth management, wealth transfer and tax strategy.
