Former Federal Prosecutor Joel Schwartz Joins the Firm in Washington, DC
Litigator Joel Schwartz has joined Stinson Leonard Street LLP as a partner in the firm's Washington, DC office.
Joel has significant trial experience in the health care, financial services, immigration and cyber security industries. He is a former federal prosecutor and public defender and has tried hundreds of cases to verdict – including prosecuting the United States' civil enforcement action against the tobacco industry under the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute. He has successfully negotiated and litigated numerous Food & Drug Administration , Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Product Safety Commission matters including off-label marketing of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, tobacco fraud and regulation, FDA approval and clinical testing, CGMP and food and drug inspection issues.
In his white collar defense practice, Joel has successfully defended numerous clients that were the target of government investigations and prosecutions. For instance through his representation, he has exonerated individuals targeted in public corruption , government contracting fraud and corporate embezzlement investigations. He defended a luxury home manufacturer and the company's managing broker in a mortgage and bank fraud investigation. Joel persuaded the Justice Department and the Federal Housing Finance Agency to not prosecute the company or the broker. He also recently represented an online education company against allegations of deceptive advertising and marketing fraud by the Federal Trade Commission.
Joel is also a former assistant director of enforcement at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' White Collar Committee. He joins the firm from a successful private practice in the Washington, DC area. He earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law.
Stinson's Washington, DC office continues to grow with addition of Schwartz. In the past 18 months the firm has added partners Roy Goldberg, Lisa Harig, Eric Liebeler, Timothy McTaggart and Bernadette Sargeant to the Washington, DC office.
