Behind the Lens Parents often can't resist introducing their preschoolers to a favorite tradition or pass time. Vicki Smith's parents wanted to share their love of photography, so at the young age of three they gave Vicki her first camera. Vicki, who is a partner at Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP, always enjoyed photography growing up but put her artistic talents aside in pursuit of a juris doctorate. It wasn't until 2006 that she decided to seriously pursue the art form. During working hours Vicki focuses her legal practice on complex business litigation. She has represented clients in both federal and state courts, with extensive experience in antitrust litigation, multi-district litigation, class action litigation and intellectual property litigation. When she is not providing legal counsel, Vicki likes to travel and express herself through photography. On her way to improving her work she found Photo Quest Adventure's photography workshops, receiving hands-on instruction on how to capture vibrant, dynamic images of exotic locations and interesting portraits. These small-group workshop trips have included the Netherlands, Patagonia, Kenya, and the Galapagos Islands. Vicki also has photos in her collection from a variety of locations from places such as Italy and Alaska. "I enjoy working with the natural inner play of light and color. My goal in shooting images is to spend as much time as possible shooting and as little time as possible editing the images on the computer," Vicki said. "When it comes to types of photography, I'm drawn to environmental portraiture because the detail-rich environment can really bring a person's character to life." Vicki also does commercial work with models, including some work for local businesses. Her photography has been selected for the cover of the KC Counselor, the KCMBA Bar Directory, and in 2009, Vicki's photograph of a Holland landscape won the "Best of Show" and "People's Choice" Awards in the Kansas City Art at Work competition. Vicki also was a featured guest on Kansas City After Hours, a late night talk show about Kansas City's night life. "I am passionate about photography because I think everyone should experience the world through a variety of different viewpoints. I love bringing concepts to life and capturing the essence of a place," Vicki said. Experiencing life through a variety of viewpoints is one of Vicki's many strengths. From excelling at the art of photography to excelling at client representation, Vicki brings her talents to life at behind the lens and behind the law.
