Pro Bono

Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP is committed to providing pro bono service in our communities and believes it is an important element of every attorney's professional responsibility. The firm recognizes its special obligation to assist attorneys in fulfilling pro bono obligations to the community. Pro bono work also provides associates the opportunity to develop skills and obtain meaningful courtroom and client contact experience.

Pro Bono Highlights

• In January 2009, the firm announced a new pro bono policy. The policy emphasizes the firm's goal to contribute to pro bono work at least 3 percent of the firm's total billable hours or 60 hours per attorney annually. Attorneys receive 60 creditable hours to perform pro bono work.

• The firm signed the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association's "Law Firm Pro Bono Pledge."

Examples of pro bono work include:

• The Marlborough Community Coalition is a neighborhood group in Kansas City's east side that works to make the area a better place to live and work. The firm's attorneys helped the coalition in its formation as a Missouri not-for-profit corporation, prepared a beneficiary deed, and assisted with illegal dumping and Abandoned Housing Act work, among other matters.

• The firm's attorneys worked to assist the Linwood Library in purchasing property for a new library building. The work included a variety of real estate, public law and banking issues.

• The firm's attorneys have represented Ali Mohamed Bagegni for several years. Bagegni is a former director of the Columbia, Mo., Islamic American Relief Agency charged with improperly transferring money and property into Iraq during the period when sanctions were in effect.
