Barnard brings extensive intellectual property litigation experience to the Stinson IP litigation team. He has represented global businesses defending allegations of patent, trademark, false advertising, trade secret and copyright cases. He has also successfully enforced his client's intellectual property rights and secured million-dollar settlements and verdicts in litigation across the country. In 2012 in Los Angeles, he won what was at the time the fifth-highest false advertising jury verdict in U.S. history, in addition to a complete defense verdict against the defendant’s counterclaims. Businesses in manufacturing, agriculture, software, alcohol, financial services, healthcare, retail, life sciences, marketing, media and other industries rely on Barnard to provide a full range of IP counseling services. He manages clients’ trademark portfolios, creates trade secret protection programs, conducts copyright fair use analysis, advises on Non-Practicing Entity risk management strategies and assists clients with insurance recovery in intellectual property disputes. He joined the firm after serving as the chair of the intellectual property litigation team at Lathrop & Gage in Kansas City, and prior to that was a federal law clerk for the Honorable Nanette Laughrey. Barnard earned his J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. He was named an "Up & Coming Attorney" by Missouri Lawyers Weekly, is a BTI Client Service Award winner, has been recognized by Super Lawyers® and Best Lawyers, and is a past chairman of the Kansas City FilmFest.
